Rene Butler, DVM
I grew up in Southern California, a city girl. My pets were mice, small birds, a rabbit and lots and lots of goldfish. Neighbors would often bring me orphan baby birds and kittens to nurse back to health. My mother's family were farmers in South Dakota, and we would visit in the summer. I was the crazy cousin from California out playing with the barn cats and the calves!
I can't remember a time when I didn't want to be a veterinarian. I was always very focused, studied hard and graduated from UC Davis Veterinary school in 1989. I have worked at several small animal practices in the San Francisco Bay Area, and while the majority of my patients are cats and dogs, I also enjoy treating birds, reptiles and pocket pets.
I have done many euthanasias over the years, primarily in a clinic, but also have gone to the clients home, when possible. Home euthanasia is so much preferable, providing a calm and stress-free environment. My goal is to help both owners and their pets through a very difficult decision. I hope that providing this service with Lap of Love, I can help you honor and cherish your pets life when saying goodbye.
"Death is nothing at all. I have only slipped away to the next room. I am I and you are you. Whatever we were to each other, That, we still are." Henry Scott Holland
"Dr Rene Butler's help was what we needed to make an informed decision about our dog Lola. Her professional guidance and hands on approach eased our minds. Dr. Rene walked us through every scenario of our aging pet so we were able to gain a clearer picture of our options. In the end our family was in agreement that is was Lola's time to be with the angels. Dr. Butler guided us gently and with utmost care and concern for Lola. She passed peacefully in my arms. Dr. Rene placed her in a beautiful basket with a pink blanket over her. The entire experience comforted our family and for that we are grateful to Dr Rene."

"Jolie, our 11 1/2 year old Great Dane, had been having trouble with her rear getting progressively weaker. In the early hours of 1/28,she let us know it was "time". We had only moved to Calistoga a few weeks before and didn't have anyone to turn to. My husband found Lap of Love online and by late morning,Dr. Rene Butler was here.
We've had Great Danes for almost 30 years and have lost our share of them. This,by far,was the best experience we've had.Dr.Butler's caring and kindness were immediately apparent.Jolie, our resident house guardian wagged her tail instead of barking.Dr. Butler made a wrenching experience more bearable with her love.
Her competence as a vet was readily apparent in the professional way she went about her unenviable task.
Jolie passed very quickly and without protest. As with the rest of our "kids",we will love her always.
We thank Dr. Butler from the bottom of our hearts........."

"I had been dreading to make this call for a long time. Dede, my 14 year old kitty, had been with me through it all, college, marriage, the birth of my 3 children, and countless foster animals. He was there for me when I had no one else. Just writing this out has me tears. My old man Dede told me it was time when he refused to eat, none of my tricks were working, so I called one of my favorite Vets for a referral and they told me about "Lap of Love". Layla was so understanding during my call. She made me feel at ease and that my baby was in the best hands. Due to my baby not eating much in the days before the call, Layla called Dr Rene to see if she could come see me sooner. Dr Rene is amazing and she came the very next day. She was so gentle and compassionate with both myself and my dear kitty. She explained everything and let me decide when to start administering things. Dede was sleeping on my bed when she came, she didn't disturb him, she introduced herself, gave him a head rub, and let me know that she was ready when I was. My baby passed peacefully in his favorite spot, on his favorite blanket, while being pet by his favorite human. I could not have asked for anything more. Dr Rene gave me a hair clipping and footprint to keep. She took him out in a bed, wrapped in a cute blanket, he looked like he was sleeping, it was nice to see him at peace. I will for sure be calling Dr. Rene for any other animal hospice needs."

"Our active, energetic Queensland was diagnosed with cancer on a Tuesday and passed just five days later. The speed of her decline was so unexpected, and her death caught us totally unprepared. Dr. Rene's presence in our home on the night of Ruth's passing was invaluable. Her warmth brought us such a sense of calm. The experience was positive and allowed us to let her go with dignity. There's no way I could have dropped her off at a vet office and driven my grieving husband home. Being together on our sofa and saying goodbye in the comfort of our home was immeasurably valuable. Laps of Love will scatter Ruth's ashes at a memorial park in Napa, and I'm so happy we can go visit her again. Thank you, Dr. Ruth."

"Our sweet Gracie of 14.5 years quickly took a turn for the worse a few weeks ago. When I called Dr. Renee Butler's office they were more than kind, sweet and understanding. They squeezed us in for an apppintment that evening as we didn't know how much longer our Gracie had. Dr. Renee called me before she arrived to advise us how to calm our Gracie down and make her comfortable until she arrived. I can not express how grateful we are to have had Dr. Renee come to our home. This was our family's first pet and she was more than kind, extremely patient and explained what was happening very well. She asked about Gracie's life and laughed with us as we shared stories. Gracie loved being around her people most and we are happy she was able to be put to rest in her home surrounded by those who loved her most. Dr. Renee made this extremely difficult time a bit less painful for us all. Her sympathy through it all made us feel like she truely cared. She followed up with us a few days later with condolences and even offered a listening ear if needed. I can not thank Dr. Renee enough for all she did for our Gracie and family. I would highly recommend her to anyone needing this service."

"This testimonial is long overdue but nonetheless is heartfelt. Koda, the dog on the right in the picture, was the most loyal and well behaved dog my husband and I have ever had. Koda was always wagging his tail and happy to be around us. He was very active until his health declined. He lived for 12 years. Unfortunately, he had an enlarged heart and hip dysplasia and his health was declining in his last year of life. He was uncomfortable and had difficulty breathing, walking, getting up, and laying back down in the last month of his life. We wanted him to be put to sleep at home where he was comfortable. When Dr. Butler came out to our house in May, it was the most peaceful experience we have ever had in such a situation and having worked in a veterinary office in the past, I personally have witnessed many euthanasia appointments. Dr. Butler was so nice and understanding of our situation. It seemed like she had known Koda for years yet it was the first time she had met him. She spoke so gently to Koda. When she administered the first shot to him to relax him, it was the first time in a year that we saw him lay down in complete comfort. We will never forget it! After everything was done, Dr. Butler comforted us with kind words. She took the time to send us a card in the mail with a reflective poem and some wildflower seeds to remind us of Koda. We recommend this service over taking an animal in to the vet's office for euthanasia as it is so peaceful for the pet and the family. We are so thankful for this service and for Dr. Butler.
