Meet The Doctor

Katie Gies, DVM

Growing up in Concord, NC, my family always had many animals and they have been an integral part of my life for as long as I can remember.  Some of my pets have been my best friends both as a child and as an adult. As a child, I was especially influenced by the care and concern that a local ER had for my family and our pets and decided that was the path that I wanted to follow as I entered college and began to seek a lifelong career.  I attended the NCSU College of Veterinary Medicine and graduated in 2006.

I am especially personally invested in caring for animals in their greatest times of need - when they have a crisis or in their final moments. This is why I have spent the last 10 years almost exclusively in emergency medicine and why I am now working with Lap of Love as well to offer home euthanasia and hospice care. As an emergency veterinarian, I often get asked the question, "How can you do this job?", particularly in reference to the higher numbers of euthanasias that we are called upon to do. Though it can be challenging at times, I feel that helping our pets in their highest times of stress or pain is the best service I can offer to them and their families; whether that be to provide them healing and relief or to help them pass without pain and with dignity.

I experienced the role that hospice can play in end of life care with the passing of my own mother several years ago. Through that difficult time, I came to understand that losing our pets can be every bit as emotionally difficult as losing a close family member.  This realization, which was very surprising to me at the time, has deepened my empathy with clients and their pets during this most important and most difficult time in the pet and family relationship. My goal is to provide both pet and family with a compassionate, calm and painless experience which will serve as a comforting memory.

"We expected when we heard the knock on the door the tension would rise to a very high level. Instead, Dr. Katie's presence brought calm into our home when we needed it the most. We cried more than I thought we had tears for. Buster was quite a high maintenance dog but so loving and so worth it. But we realized it was time, and Dr. Katie's gentle assistance in making that decision was priceless. I am sure this was the right thing to do and I am sure having him in the comfort of our home will make this memory easier to accept doing the best thing for Buster.

Thanks for your presence. This was a blessing in a difficult time for us."

Was one of the greatest Vets that Bonnie has had. She was very kind, thoughtful, and caring. I would recommend Lap of Love to any animal lover as they know how to help people in this time of sorrow and need."

"Dr. Katie was so wonderful to Dave in his last moments. Our appreciation cannot be expressed properly in words. Dave was our little boy and my first love. He died without being stressed at all and with tremendous dignity."

"Dr. Katie was so very caring and compassionate. She told me everything that was going to happen and let me take all the time I needed to let my angel cross the Rainbow Bridge. She spoke very kind and caring words to let me know that I was doing the right thing. She helped make this very difficult decision less painful. Thank you so much, I can't say enough good things about her."

"I can't tell you enough how amazing of an experience that was. We were all distraught and terribly stressed. Your professionalism, efficiency and pleasant demeanor were top notch. You shared a beautiful experience with us in our home, while sitting on the floor like you were a friend. You're a gift to this community. We've told everyone how sad, but how beautiful and priceless it was not to stress Dave out for his last moments. We will never use anything but your service and ask if you leave this organization to be notified. Thank you doesn't do justice."

"I know this is not a "typical" testimonal. But it has taken me this long to be able to bring this to your website. This a letter to my sweet Nikki Mae, who went to the bridge six months ago today. God bless and thank you Lap of Love for helping me and my Nikki with her final journey. Dr. Katie Gies is an angel.

Dear Nikki,

Six months ago I held you in my arms for the last time. I kissed your face. I brushed your hair. I talked to you and told you so many things. You were so quiet. You were so peaceful. I knew that it was time. Dr Katie gave you an injection so you would relax. You started dozing off. I remember you were snoring. So cute. I told Dr. Katie that we were ready. I held you tight and she gave you another injection. I felt your last breath. I felt your last heartbeat. Your body went limp. I told you how much I love you and for you to go ahead and cross the bridge. I know there were many animals and people waiting to see you. I told you to not be scared, that it was okay to go without me. I told you I love you and that I would see you later. I held you for just a little while longer. I called Dr. Katie back in. It was time to let your physical body go. Dr. Katie had the sweetest little basket to put you in, and a blanket to cover you up. She did not cover your face. I thought that was nice. I asked her if I could carry you down the stairs and put you in her car. She said I could. It was the last time I would carry you down those steps. She let me put you in the front seat. I put my hand to your face to close your eyes. I closed the car door and Dr. Katie gave me a hug. We said our goodbyes and Dr. Katie drove away with you. I watched until her car was out of sight. I looked up at the sky. It was a perfect sunny day. No clouds. Just blue skies.

Helping you cross the bridge was both the best and worst day of my life. I always promised you that I would be with you when that time came. But my soul died when you did my love.

I hope you are happy. I hope you are running and playing and being my silly girl.

I love you so so much Nikki.

Be a good girl and please come visit soon.

Love forever,

Nikkimae Ball

“RIP Salty Dog – You Were The Best Dog Ever

I found Salt in June of 2012. I was entering the interstate after a long day at work and through the darkness I saw this white flash of a dog walking along the entrance ramp. I attempted to stop, but cars behind me were making it impossible. After three futile days of trying to catch this dog, I ...
