Meet The Doctor

Mary Jane Cionni, DVM

I grew up in different cities in the US since my father was in the Air Force, but spent most of my time in Cincinnati, Ohio. I have always loved animals, and, as a child, read every book from our local library about dogs, cats and horses.  I knew I wanted to be a veterinarian but it wasn't until my cat Chloe that my dream became a reality.

I adopted Chloe, a beautiful Siamese kitten, in 1990, and she absolutely changed my life. I found myself hanging around the local vet clinic a lot, and realized it was time to pursue my lifelong dream of becoming a veterinarian.

I attended Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine from 1993 - 1997 with Chloe and another Siamese cat, Vanna, by my side.  Those 4 years were very happy and I couldn't wait to start my life as a veterinarian. I had my own clinic in Birmingham Alabama and it was a dream come true.

Then, my beautiful Chloe developed lung cancer at the age of 15 years. I had to let her go. It was devastating, but she was suffering, and I know it was the right decision. I still miss her, but I will always have her in my heart. Even as a veterinarian, I recognized there is only so much we can do with medicine.

My passion for end of life care deepened when my father developed liver cancer in 2010 and I moved home to assist with his care. Towards the end, we had hospice care for him and it helped us all so much, my dad and all of my family. They were so caring and kind, in the end making a huge difference for us all by guiding us through this sacred time. I knew this is something that I can extend into the veterinary field.

I believe our furry children deserve the same treatment. I have been doing home euthanasia visits since 2013 and cherish the bond I have with pet parents.  I feel that every pet should have a peaceful, painless, and dignified end of life transition. I am honored to be able to help provide this to families and their precious animal family members.

I moved to Salt Lake City in 2012 to be near my family. I am the proud mother of 3 fur babies: 1 dog, Diesel, an Airedale Mix, and 2 kitties, Bungi and Bacio. I like to fish, snowshoe, hike, and read.

"To: Dr Mary Jane Cionni DVM

I want to take a moment and thank you for the kindness and compassion you provided to myself, Jean & especially our "best friend & companion" Vincent.

Saying goodbye to a cherished friend is never easy, especially a friend who gave so much and asked for so little in return.

But your kind touch and caring in easing Vincent’s pain were a comfort to us.

He will be missed in our daily lives.

The hurt will be lessened as time goes by.

But he will never be forgotten by us and will live forever in our hearts frolicking in the fields where he liked to play.

Thank You"

"Dear Dr. Mary Jane,

Thank you so much for all of your kindness. I am deeply sad about Scarbo, my constant little shadow for the last 17 years. Thank you for making his last moments so calm and peaceful for him. Also, I'm so sorry you had to drive through such treacherous weather to get here.

Thank you again for everything."

"Dr. Mary Jane was wonderful with us and with Molly. She was kind, gentle and professional and when I asked if it really was Molly's time she assured me that she would tell us if she thought we could wait. She let us know that what we were doing was the best thing for Molly and that we were doing the right thing. He calm and professional manner put everyone at ease and though this was one of the hardest thing we had ever had to she made it as easy as possible for all of us--Molly, my husband and me and even our other cocker Cocoa. We could not have asked for a better vet to help us say goodbye, so tough to do, to Molly. We will absolutely call on her again when it is Cocoa's time which will hopefully not be for awhile but with a 15 year old you have to be realistic.

Thank you, Dr. Mary Jane for your help at a exceedingly painful time for us."

“Our beautiful, funny, loving and most of all much loved Molly, a 16 year old tri-colored cocker spaniel died peacefully on Saturday, December 17, 2016 at our home in Cottonwood Heights, UT after giving us 15 years and 9 months of unconditional love. I don't know what we will do without her pawing us when she wanted attention or more so, a snack ...
