Let us introduce you to the amazing hospice veterinarians in your area.
I grew up in Southern California and have wanted to be a veterinarian since I was a young child. Throughout my childhood and adult life, I have surrounded myself with dogs, cats, and horses. Animals have always been an integral part of my happiness and well-being. I attended Kansas State University for veterinary school, moved to Washington State for my internship, and was lucky enough to move back to San Diego, CA to work in private practice. During my career, I have worked with many different species and have seen the bond between people and a great variety of animal family members. I have had a special interest in geriatric medicine in various species and am constantly in search of the best methods and medications to improve mobility, comfort, and quality of life.
My passion for veterinary hospice and end of life care was sparked by a special bond with a French Bulldog named Bella. She was diagnosed with cancer at four years of age and I was devastated. I knew my time with her would be short, but it would be cherished. As her quality of life started to decline, I began searching for in home care to be sure she wouldn’t suffer. As it turned out at the time, there were very few options for in home small animal care. Helping Bella through her last days on earth made me realize that was how I wanted to help other families. EVERY pet should have the option of being with their family and in their own home where they feel safe and peaceful for this final step.
While making the decision to say goodbye to a family member never gets easier, I feel honored to assist and guide others through the process. The human animal bond is a sacred one and I strive to strengthen that bond by alleviating suffering with dignity and peace.
Leann Sargeant, DVM
"Dr. Leann was amazing. She was so kind, gentle and caring. I’m so glad she was there to provide Ashley with a peaceful passing. I could feel her compassion and love for all pets and she eased my husband and I through the process. My husband and I talk about Dr. Leann still and will for a long time. We both agree she has truly found her calling. Both pets and their owners are graced to have her with them in those final moments. Thank you Dr. Leann."

"I want to begin by saying that this decision is never taken lightly; watching a beloved family member deteriorate with age has to be one of the toughest things to go through. After almost 14 years with our yellow lab, Zachary, it became clear that euthanasia was our only choice to end his suffering. When Dr. Leann arrived to our home, my entire family (including Zachary) felt at ease and safe. There is no other veterinarian I would have chosen for this difficult procedure; Dr. Leann exceeded my expectations way beyond anything I could have hoped for. She was extremely helpful, informative, caring, gentle, and calming for all of us throughout the entire appointment. Losing my big (younger) brother is one of the hardest things my family has endured, but I am so thankful that Dr. Leann was there for our sweet Zachary. The Raiano's thank you so much, Dr. Leann. You will never be forgotten."

"Dr. Leann was amazing. In such a hard time, she helped us know that we were doing the right thing for Akosha and that is really was her time. She spent so much time with us just talking about our memories of good time we had with Akosha over the 15 years. We have two other dogs, which is one reason we chose to do it at home, so they knew she had passed. We will now always do it with Dr. Leann. Dr. Leann even emailed us to see if we were okay and let us know if we ever wanted to talk to let her know. She is the best."

"Dr. Leann was wonderful. From the moment we met, I just felt calm and at ease. I knew Buster was in good hands. She explained everything and treated him like her own. It made an incredibly difficult situation a little easier."

"Dr. Leann assisted my best friend Olivia on her final day. I could not have asked for a more caring, gentle and loving person. When Dr. Leann first approached, Olivia wagged her tail for the first time in 3 days and looked up at Dr. Leann. I knew Olivia knew that this tender person was going to take her out of her pain and suffering. I took it as a sign, as painful as it was for me, I knew it was time. Dr. Leann took the time to talk to me about the situation and made me confident that I was making the best decision for Olivia. Thank you so much Dr. Leann"

"I can't stress enough the importance of having someone who is both informative and compassionate present during a time like this. I was an emotional wreck during the process but Dr. Leann educated me on the procedure and expected behavior while offering both kind words and encouragement. After all was completed, I felt better knowing that I made the right decision and chose the right professional. Losing a pet is incredibly difficult but Dr. Leann helped me immensely through that process."
