Meet The Doctor

Katie Gies, DVM

Growing up in Concord, NC, my family always had many animals and they have been an integral part of my life for as long as I can remember.  Some of my pets have been my best friends both as a child and as an adult. As a child, I was especially influenced by the care and concern that a local ER had for my family and our pets and decided that was the path that I wanted to follow as I entered college and began to seek a lifelong career.  I attended the NCSU College of Veterinary Medicine and graduated in 2006.

I am especially personally invested in caring for animals in their greatest times of need - when they have a crisis or in their final moments. This is why I have spent the last 10 years almost exclusively in emergency medicine and why I am now working with Lap of Love as well to offer home euthanasia and hospice care. As an emergency veterinarian, I often get asked the question, "How can you do this job?", particularly in reference to the higher numbers of euthanasias that we are called upon to do. Though it can be challenging at times, I feel that helping our pets in their highest times of stress or pain is the best service I can offer to them and their families; whether that be to provide them healing and relief or to help them pass without pain and with dignity.

I experienced the role that hospice can play in end of life care with the passing of my own mother several years ago. Through that difficult time, I came to understand that losing our pets can be every bit as emotionally difficult as losing a close family member.  This realization, which was very surprising to me at the time, has deepened my empathy with clients and their pets during this most important and most difficult time in the pet and family relationship. My goal is to provide both pet and family with a compassionate, calm and painless experience which will serve as a comforting memory.

"Thank you for coming to our home and helping Delaney pass peacefully, surrounded by us and in a familiar setting. It was worth the small financial sacrifice to be able to have this done at our home.

You helped make a truly rotten situation more bearable and we appreciate how lovingly you handled Laney after she had passed. Our biggest concern was that she'd be tossed about and that would just break my heart.

We appreciate you more than you know. Thank you for caring enough to help us during this time."

"Your calm, sensitivity, skill and empathy made Swampy's leaving so much more peaceful than it might have been. And of course that made it far easier for me as well. You have a true calling. Thank you for sharing you gift with us."

"Dr. Katie was absolutely phenomenal. She was kind and compassionate and even loved on Cricket. She was very thorough and she looked at each of my sons when she explained the process. She let them ask questions and answered them as well. She sent us a follow up email and mailed a card. She has assured me that we did the right thing and helped Cricket feel better. We really appreciate you Dr. Katie!!"

"Dr. Katie Gies.

I really want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for your kindness & compassion for Mary Jane & our family. It was such a crucial yet vulnerable time in my life & you were just so patient & comforting to me. I also really appreciate how gentle & loving you were with Mary Jane! I can only imagine the sorrow you face on a regular basis yet you choose to provide this difficult but necessary service day after day. It takes a special person to provide this service for people & their beloved pets. I really dont have words to express my gratitude to you but God Bless You for being by my side in helping ease Mary Jane's journey to "rainbow bridge". I wont hesitate to refer you to anyone who may need your assistance. If I should ever need this service again I couldn't imagine going on this journey without your support & personal touch! God Bless You!!!

"I can't express to you how comforting it was to be able to allow Murray to pass away peacefully in his own bed with Dr. Katie, Blount, & me at his side. At nearly 16 yrs old, we knew that his little body was worn out. We knew his hearing & vision were almost gone. We new about the degenerative disc disease in his back. It was hard to watch him struggle with increasing difficulty to get up and make his way to the front door to go outside. We knew his liver & kidneys were failing. When he refused all food for the last few days, we knew he was ready and that it was time for us to let him go. We are thankful for your presence, compassion, & patience with us during his final moments."

“Our dear sweet Cricket "Crickey", "Cricket Puppy", "Puppy", left this Earth peacefully and surrounded by his loving human parents and 3 human little brothers. He was such a good dog who loved us with everything within him. He was loyal until the end as he laid in each of our laps and told us all goodbye on the day that we knew it was time for him ...

“Devastated doesn't begin to describe how I feel without my sweet boxer Mary Jane. There are simply no words. There will forever be a paw sized hole in my heart that only she could fill. I have never had such a protective, devoted, loyal, & loving companion. My childrens "4 legged mommy" as she was lovingly referred to by her human sister Faith. ...

“Bear you are the light of our lives and your only desire was to be with us and please us in every way. We will miss the way you would back up to us so you could have your hind quarters scratched and petted. We often called you Bear Butt with love and humor. We were so sorry when you first injured your right leg and we tried to keep you ...
