Additional Aftercare Fees

To best honor your personal space, our doctors do not arrive with a vet technician.  Therefore, if your family has elected cremation for a pet over 30 pounds, we may ask your assistance moving your loved one after euthanasia has been performed.  If additional help is needed outside what is available in the home, we may request that the crematory come to assist us.  In this case, an additional fee will be needed to cover their charge.

Dr. Jordy

Jordy Merrifield, DVM

I’m a Phoenix native, an ardent connoisseur of Mexican food, and a “mom” to four crazy canines. My favorite hobbies are hiking, yoga, skiing, reading and good conversation. I attended Arizona State University for my bachelor’s degree in Biology. I briefly left my beloved state and attended the University of Florida in Gainesville. While I loved my time at UF for veterinary school, my dogs and I happily moved back to the Valley of the Sun in the summer of 2017.

People often say to me “Your job must be awful” but I respectfully disagree. While end of life care comes with an inherent emotional “tax”, I truly feel I was called to this career. I find it both deeply fulfilling and a tremendous honor to help usher pets peacefully across the rainbow bridge. I’ve lost both human and animal loved ones so I know just how important those last days and moments are and I will do everything in my power to make them as good as they can be for you and your pet. No matter how hard or heavy, I love this work and feel blessed every day to do it.

"Dr. Jordy was an absolute godsend in helping us with our dog Brewster. It was very traumatic as he became struck with a terminal tumor only a day prior. The tumor had developed within a week, and it was completely unexpected. Although Brewster was 12 years old, he still acted very much like a puppy and never had a health issue in his life. It came as a shock and the diagnosis and decision was very difficult. Dr. Jordy's receptionist Lisa was excellent on the phone and very patient with me as I tried to get through the call for scheduling. When Dr. Jordy arrived, her demeanor and presence were very calming and soothing. My 11-year-old son was present, and this was his first experience with having to lose a pet, especially the one who has been there his whole life! Dr. Jordy was very respectful of the situation and spoke to him as she did me. She explained what she would do and what would be happening with Brewster as a result.

We have another dog, and two cats and Dr. Jordy was very comforting to them. Brewster was able to pass in my son and my's lap, surrounded by the other pets in the home in a tranquil and peaceful environment. I will forever be grateful for the experience Dr. Jordy provided for my son and me. She took Brewster away in a basket with a blanket covering everything but his head. He appeared peaceful, comfortable and sleeping, which is the way I would always want to remember him. This service meant so much to my son and I. We appreciate the paw print in clay and the hair clippings she gave us of Brewster. It was the best experience is a very traumatic circumstance."

"We cannot even begin to thank Lap of Love for all they did to help us say goodbye to our sweet dog, Chili Bean. We called to get information and spoke to Julia, who started our journey with such compassion. They had an open appointment for that day, but we didn't think it was time yet; however, Chili started to go downhill and when we called back, we were told that Dr. Jordy could come to our house late that afternoon. That was our first miracle, our second miracle was Dr. Jordy.

Dr. Jordy felt like an angel to us. She was there, but only lightly, never intruding on our precious time with Chili, only there to guide us and give Chili the peace she so deserved, sending her over the Rainbow Bridge ever so gently. We were able to say goodbye to our Chili Bean in her backyard, which she loved so much, with the sun shining on her and the birds singing. It was the most peaceful parting we have ever had with one of our dogs. Thank you Lap of Love."

"I want to thank Dr. Merrifield for coming out at the last minute on New Year's Eve day. She was kind, compassionate, professional, efficient, and caring. My cat had been diagnosed with cancer but had taken a dramatic turn for the worse overnight. She made the difference between a painful and frightening trip to my regular vet and the most gentle, loving ending possible. As difficult as this always is, it couldn't have gone any better. Thank you so much again for both this important service and the exceptional way in which it was provided."

"Dr. Jordy was incredibly compassionate and helpful to me and Sam and I'm so grateful that she was available to help. I couldn't have had a better Dr. to help my boy Sam during the last moments of his life. I can honestly say that Dr. Jordy made the experience calming and comfortable to both Sam and me. I can go to sleep at night knowing Sam was peaceful in his last moments. Thank you Dr. Jordy!"

"Our family was so blessed to happen upon an adorable 7 week old calico kitten in 2001, cold and wet, scared and lonely at our local humane society shelter. We felt so blessed that we could bring her to our home and name her Abby June. 4 years later we were blessed with the sweetest 5 month old black lab mix that needed a home and we named Penny. She had the enormous heart that is so typical of a Labrador. So kind and caring, always with a smile on her face.

As the two of grew older they became the best of friends, inseparable. We were so blessed to have them for almost 18 and 14 years , which made it all the harder to make the difficult decision to let them go. The day I realized I had to make the call and inquire about Lap of Love’s services was one of the most difficult calls I’ve ever had to make.

A very kind woman named Amanda answered the phone and I could hardly speak. It was so difficult to stop crying enough for her to understand me. She was so kind and patient. I was so grateful to her. We were able to set up the appointment for a few days later. Those days were so difficult, but my daughter and I spent as much quality time with Abby and Penny as possible.

When the dreaded day came, Dr. Merrifield arrived at our door. My heart sunk into my stomach. But Dr. Merrifield brought a calmness over us with her kind and gentle nature. She spent time with Penny and Abby, watching them and assessing their state of health. They were very comfortable with her, as were we. She pointed out the difficulties and health problems that presented themselves and reassured us that our decision was correct. This was comforting because I had been struggling with this decision for about 6 months. So hard to know when the time is right.

Dr. Merrifield kindly and painlessly laid our precious babies to rest. I can’t thank her enough. The good Lord sent us the very best possible scenario in Dr. Merrifield for this very difficult day. For that we are forever grateful. Now only time can heal the emptiness of their absence, but they are no longer in pain and are forever in our hearts❤️❤️"

"Saying goodbye to Tulip was one of the hardest things I've ever had to do. Dr. Jordy was so compassionate and loving and made our experience the best it could be under the difficult circumstances. I can't thank her enough for putting my mind & heart at ease. I will miss my Tulip forever."

“Just before 10:30 on a beautiful October morning in 2018, the loving and stalwart heart of our little wire fox terrier stopped beating. She passed away in her bed, with her adoring people by her side. Her final treat was warm scrambled egg, cheddar cheese, potato and, for the first time ever, bacon. She took each morsel with great pleasure, ...
