Meet The Doctor

Colleen Lambo, DVM

For any nomad, the term “home” ceases to be about where you live and instead refers to the constants and companions in your life. I have moved 28 times and lived in 10 states and 6 countries, which has made the question “where are you from” one of my least favorite conversation starters!  My family has always consisted of more pets than people, and the furred and feathered friends trekked the globe with us.  They helped to make sense of the instability and were undeniable troopers.  As I watched our first gracefully aging feline, OC, start to lose her joie de vivre, the decision to help her pass comfortably felt like a gift we could provide to thank her for all her love.  Watching her ease away from the world while curled up in my mother’s lap gave me confidence in our choice, and I have been a strong supporter of compassionate euthanasia ever since.

My deep love for animals and interests in science and medicine made becoming a veterinarian an obvious career choice.  I attended vet school at Kansas State University, graduating in 2009.  During my veterinary internship at Louisiana State University, I took the responsibility of euthanasia as an honor, and would go well out of my way to help my clients as much as I was able.  We would take blankets to the front lawn and make clay paws for every family member when desired.  I understand the incredible importance of a fond farewell and am eager to provide that to any family in need.

I chose to continue my education with a focus on conservation, and have completed a post-doc and a Master’s degree.  My research projects allowed me to produce ocelot and tiger babies using artificial techniques in zoos.  I worked with scientists at Cornell University as the surgeon who transferred the world’s first IVF puppies, and trained veterinarians to perform laparoscopic transfers of pet embryos.  I sincerely enjoy working to bring life into the world, especially endangered species, and find it equally rewarding to help our companions leave the world in peace.

I moved to College Station to continue my education as a PhD student at Texas A&M University.  As a career student involved in conservation, I have missed interacting with and helping people and their pets.  Working for Lap of Love, and being there to help make the best of difficult situations, allows me to support my community here in Texas.
