Saudade
2/3/2006 - 9/10/2014Sadly we lost our lovely boy Saudade to stomach cancer. He was so young and full of life and was taken entirely too soon. This happened very quickly without much time to prepare for the loss. There is no way to fully comprehend our loss. The stillness and quiet in the house is deafening.

I’ve always been a Weimaraner lover and Charles gave me/us the best birthday present I could have ever imagined a little over 8 years ago. His name is CH Mischief’s O Saudade de Arpoador (AKA Dade or Dodgie). He earned his AKC breed championship title at 15 months and enjoyed many years in the sport of agility (a series of jumps, weaves and obstacles on a timed course that we ran together). The bond that we established in the agility ring is one that is so incredibly intense because success relies on minor physical and verbal cues and a whole lot of trust. Trust that he will do what I ask of him and his trust that I will be in a certain place at a certain time and not run over him.

Weimaraners are the type of dog that rely in physical contact with you or at least have one eye open watching you at all times. They are very sensitive and have extreme separation anxiety when you are gone, as they just want to be with you and constantly share their unconditional love. Saudade was no different, as he was always watching us with his loving eyes awaiting praise and affection.

Saudade was graced with 2 incredible breeders who we call our family. They have always been there for us in thick and thin and we can’t thank them enough. Saudade just loved them and went crazy when they arrived and heard, “pup pup pup” chanted by them. He obviously recalled a wonderful and loving time as a puppy and many visits to see his grandparents. Our walkers through they years from Becky’s Pet Care made his live so special and we are so grateful to them for keeping him safe. Daycare was at Dogtopia in Tysons and the staff there just adored him as he enjoyed running around with all of his friends. The team at A Click Above (ACA) nurtured us through obedience and agility training. They are a special group of individuals who patiently worked with us inch by inch to accomplish each task and build upon our skills. We asked the ACA crew if we could have a couple hours to do a final set of runs the weekend before he passed and they agreed. Saudade always struggled with completing his weaves poles. This day, he did four weave poll runs and hit every mark. Thank you for the opportunity to train with your crew and one last time to enjoy the team spirit that he and I shared on the course.

Saudade was the center of our lives and our days began and ended with him. For the past eight and a half years we tried to keep the little guy healthy, happy and exhausted. Exhausted was always the challenge, as he loved people, animals and his toys. We have many headless Froggies and Bear-ies as evidence.

We thank you, dear Saudade, for all that you gave to us. You are truly a man’s best friend and we love you very much. We hope you are playing with your Uncles Finley and Orson in some open field or doggie beach, where it is always sunny and full of squirrels to chase. We miss you little buddy and don’t worry, we won’t sit in your chair. It is always free for you to climb back in it.

Thanks to each of you who reached out with flowers, cards, donations in Saudade’s name, virtual hugs, sympathy, prayers, tissues, and kind wise words. And thank you to Janet Meyer for being with Saudade, Charlie and me as we took the last step of this journey. You made his passing a peaceful and loving experience and we are very glad that he was at home with the three of us at his side.

Should anyone want to donate in Saudade’s name, please do so to your local rescue or our favorite local Weimaraner rescue. http://www.dcweimclub.org/rescue/index.php
