Rene Butler, DVM
I grew up in Southern California, a city girl. My pets were mice, small birds, a rabbit and lots and lots of goldfish. Neighbors would often bring me orphan baby birds and kittens to nurse back to health. My mother's family were farmers in South Dakota, and we would visit in the summer. I was the crazy cousin from California out playing with the barn cats and the calves!
I can't remember a time when I didn't want to be a veterinarian. I was always very focused, studied hard and graduated from UC Davis Veterinary school in 1989. I have worked at several small animal practices in the San Francisco Bay Area, and while the majority of my patients are cats and dogs, I also enjoy treating birds, reptiles and pocket pets.
I have done many euthanasias over the years, primarily in a clinic, but also have gone to the clients home, when possible. Home euthanasia is so much preferable, providing a calm and stress-free environment. My goal is to help both owners and their pets through a very difficult decision. I hope that providing this service with Lap of Love, I can help you honor and cherish your pets life when saying goodbye.
"Death is nothing at all. I have only slipped away to the next room. I am I and you are you. Whatever we were to each other, That, we still are." Henry Scott Holland
"We were aided in our decision-making, by a terminal diagnosis of kidney cancer for our beloved 14 yo mini poodle, Herbie. We have such loving memories of him playing at the doggie park and making new friends as a young pup! He was traumatized later on by being attacked by a large dog, a pit bull, who wouldn't let go of his neck. Herbie later also saw his older brother hit by a truck when his brother escaped being on-leash, his favorite thing to do. Herbie watched all that. He watched me scream in agony with that event, and he continued to provide much comfort as we all comforted each other when we had to say good-bye. Understandably, Herbie was forever changed. After the age of 6 he never wanted to go to the Vet, and they were very kind to him. He became afraid at the doggie park, until he became a "senior" member at the ripe old age of 8 or so! He loved it and he was our sidekick there every day. When we eventually got a younger brother for him, he welcomed Skooter very well, even tho Skooter was bossy!
Herbie was very well loved. I knew because of his anxiety with all this trauma, and his shivering at the Vet, that he would not tolerate very well going there to say good-bye. Our Vet recommended Dr. Rene Butler as someone to call to come to Herbie's home, and we did that. After looking online, I learned about Laps of Love and saw that Dr. Rene was indeed highly recommended. I talked with her right away.
Dr. Rene is very kind. She explained in such positive ways what would happen in our departing procedure. Herbie and Skooter greeted her at the door and felt very comfortable with her. Neither of our dogs were apprehensive, as Dr. Rene is very calm and understanding of dogs; they seemed to know that she was at our home to help. She never hurried us, she always thought of Herbie's well-being, and that comforted us and contributed to our well-being"

"Merlin was a consistent presence in my life for 16 years. Two years ago, he was diagnosed with diabetes. After almost two years of 2 injections of insulin every day.....it became too much for my dearest friend. His kidneys were failing, he had signs of cancer, and he was anemic. When my vet told me that it was time to make a hard decision, I was stunned. This day had finally come. And it was not a day I wanted to ever come. Merlin hated going to the vet. It was always a fight, literally getting him into the cat carrier. I thought about that being the lasting memory as he was put to sleep and I couldn't fathom doing that to him.
With tears in my eyes, I went online because a friend of mine said there were vets that would come to your home. I knew that was true, but the cost was probably astronomical. I found Lap of Love and started reading their website. Wow, and the price! For that same amount, I would take him to the vet, traumatize him with the travel there and then watch him die on the exam table. It was not something I was going to put Merlin through. I did not hesitate. I called and made an appointment for the following day, as my vet said it was imperative I do this very soon.
Dr. Rene came and her presence was a comfort to me. I felt like I was spinning out of control and wanted to run away with my cat. But, she was grounding. I needed that right at that moment. She explained what was going to happen and what to expect. And everything happened but even better than she speculated. Dr. Rene knew exactly where her boundary was. She was professional, yet very caring. When she gave Merlin his final injection, I held him in my arms and felt him die. I was crying so hard but Dr. Rene let us grieve. She was in the room, yet she stayed out of view so that we could be a family and let our best friend go. She checked Merlin three times to ensure he was gone, made us a paw print of Merlin's as a keepsake, and left us resources for pet loss support. We buried Merlin next to all our other furry friends that had gone before him.
That night, I received an email from Dr. Rene thanking me for letting her come into our home and letting her do what is so hard, but the absolute right thing. Merlin was able to die in his home he had lived in and was comfortable in, which was so important. There was no trauma, anxiety or fear on his part. He was just home with us, the people he loved. And I'm so thankful to Dr. Rene and Lap of Love that they make that possible, and for a price that is literally, a miracle.
Thank you, Dr. Rene. I will recommend Lap of Love and Dr. Rene to anyone thinking of putting their pets to sleep as a better alternative. I can ensure, I will be a long time client. The gift of letting your pets go in their familiar surroundings is something I am so glad I was able to give to Merlin.
I miss you Merlin. You will always be in my heart, even upon my very last breath. Until we meet again at Rainbow Bridge..."

"Dr Butler was wonderful. Not only to my Cubby Bear but to our little family. I have told all my friends that have pets, when the time comes, this is the only way and with Dr Butler. I am taking the precious paw print, hair, picture and card and am having it all framed for our family wall. Thank you Dr Butler for better ng an earth angel for all of us. God Bless."

"On probably the hardest day of my life, Dr. Rene made the process so much easier. My boy hated going to the vet, and I didn't want his last memories to be of that place. Dr. Rene came to my home, talked to Sam, gave him treats, and explained to me what would happen. She was kind, compassionate, and caring. As hard as it was for me to let my dog go, it was wonderful that he went next to me, on his favorite blanket, in his home where he was comfortable. It was so very peaceful, and I cannot recommend Lap of Love, or Dr. Rene Butler enough!"

"Dr. Rene will always have a place in my heart. Spunky was a 13-year old family beagle. We got him when he was a puppy and he was a handful..his name fits him perfectly! Nevertheless, he was so loved and spoiled. He was never alone at home for too long or boarded. I gave him the best life I possibly could. So when he didn't eat all his breakfast one morning, I didn't want to take him to the vet's office. He doesn't like it there and gets so scared. I found Lap of Love and they sent Dr. Rene. As soon as I saw her, I knew I did the right thing and she was the right person. Even more so given the circumstances. I had to work that day but thru facetime wth family at home, I could tell Dr. Rene was special and I put all my trust in her...her compassion and caring made it so much easier making a difficult decision. Spunky had a tumor in his stomach and if it should burst, he would suffer. I, and my faith in Dr. Rene, did the most loving thing I could do for Spunky down to his last breath. It was so peaceful..Spunky was still relatively healthy and was wagging his tail when she gave him treats. She made a paw print and left a lock of his fur. My family will be forever grateful to Dr. Rene and as I told her, she's an angel on earth..."

"I can not say enough about the kindness and caring of this organization. Dr. Rene is our angel/hero who came to our rescue on October 13, 2017. Our 14-year-old Havanese, Mojito, could no longer fight his congestive heart failure. It was his time. Unfortunatley we live in Sonoma and the city was shut down because of fires. The Dr we had arranged to help with Mo was evacuated. I found Lap of Love in a google search. I was so relieved they answered the phone after getting no answer from every vet I reached out to. Dr. Sharon, who compassionately took information she needed. Contact Dr. Rene, who was also impacted by the fire but was able to make it to our home. The anxiety of watching our baby in pain was accompanied by the anxiety of a nearby fire and was coupled with waiting for someone we had never met who was coming to our home to take care of him. Dr Rene was beyond amazing. She hugged me the minute she got out of the car. Put a gentle arm around me. Explained what would happen in a calm and nurturing voice. She relieved our baby's pain so we could have a moment with him and when we were ready helped send him to a place of no pain, no pills and only his favorite things. I am forever grateful to her and her beautiful soul."
