Aftercare Pricing

Private Cremation

Pets 50 - 99 pounds$325
Pets 100 - 149 pounds$375
Pets 150 - 200 pounds$400

With this option, your pet is cremated privately at a licensed crematory. The ashes are contained in a lovely wooden urn with an engraved nameplate and will be returned to your primary care veterinarian within two weeks. They can also be made available directly from the crematory or mailed to you.

Communal Cremation
Pets up to 49 pounds$125
Pets 50 - 99 pounds$150
Pets 100 - 149 pounds$225
Pets 150 - 200 pounds$250

This option is for families that don't wish to have their pet's ashes returned nor wish to bury at home. Pets are respectfully cremated with other pets at a licensed crematory and ashes are scattered in a pet cemetery.

Additional Aftercare Fees

To best honor your personal space, our doctors do not arrive with a vet technician.  Therefore, if your family has elected cremation for a pet over 30 pounds, we may ask your assistance moving your loved one after euthanasia has been performed.  If additional help is needed outside what is available in the home, we may request that the crematory come to assist us.  In this case, an additional fee will be needed to cover their charge.

Availability

We are here to answer your questions every day, from 6am - 10pm. Appointments are scheduled throughout the week, please call for availability.

Sometimes pets take a turn for the worse overnight or in a short amount of time, so we do our best to accommodate same day appointments with a few hours notice, but cannot guarantee that.

If this is a medical emergency, please contact your local veterinarian or one of the emergency clinics listed in the Local Resources section.

Meet the Doctor

Dr. Jennie

Jennie Finks

I grew up right here in Kankakee, IL, along with my sisters and numerous family pets through the years. I don't remember a time when I didn't want to be a veterinarian. I loved visiting our family friend's farm and playing with all the young farm animals - the barn kittens were always my favorite. I took my role as kitten tamer and socializer very seriously! I got my first job in the veterinary field as a teenager, working as a kennel worker and veterinary assistant. I am fortunate to still work with and learn from that same veterinarian mentor today.

I attended undergrad and veterinary school at the University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana, and worked in several small animal clinics in and around Chicago after graduation. I particularly enjoyed watching the bonds between families and seeing their pets grow and mature, but I felt called to do more for the communities I lived in. I returned to graduate school at Texas A & M University where I received a Master's in Veterinary Public Health. I spent the next decade of my life in Lansing, MI working for the Michigan Department of Community Health, first as a CDC Epidemic Intelligence Service (EIS) officer and then as an epidemiologist focusing on healthcare-associated and resistant pathogens. In 2016, my kids and I returned to Kankakee to be closer to extended family. We currently enjoy the company of 2 dogs, 5 cats (how did that even happen?!) and 2 rats in our home - as well as 5 spoiled backyard chickens.

Returning to veterinary clinical practice was a difficult transition, but I again found the most rewarding aspect of veterinary care to be solving medical issues allowing me to provide relief to patients and their families to nurture the bond throughout a pet's life. In addition to my patients, I have helped numerous personal and family pets cross the rainbow bridge throughout the years. Most recently our 13 year old beagle, Augie P. Doggie, who suffered from Congestive Heart Failure. I wish that Aug had been in the comfort of our home in his final moments, but take peace knowing how much he loved sniffing around the clinic and enjoying a cheeseburger before his final journey.

I feel it is a unique gift to ease suffering and an honor to be present to bear witness to the lifelong love between a family and pet in their final moments. When the opportunity to join Lap of Love presented itself, I knew it would be the perfect addition to my general practice work. Providing in-home veterinary hospice and end of life care will allow me to serve members of my community in one of the most difficult, yet loving and generous, moments of their pet's life.

"Dr. Jennie Finks was the one that came to my house on that sad day. I'm going to do my best in expressing how her kindness & thoughtfulness made a sad/hard time just a little bit easier...And as sad as I was I was grateful it was her that was there. She made my little buddy feel at ease by gently talking & petting him with me & made me feel as comfortable as she could as well...I'm the one not comfortable with humans. She was very kind & compassionate to us both. Thank you!"

"Dr. Jennie Finks was the vet who came to our home recently. We knew our 9 yr old Pittie’s days were near the end of life. In the past years we have always taken our dogs to our usual Vet’s office to be put down, but this time we opted for something more private and comfortable for our girl. She was not walking well and at nearly 90 lbs, was getting harder to get up and around anywhere. The thought of her ending her days in an unfamiliar cold exam room were not what we wanted. Dr. Finks walked into our home as if she was an old friend and our dog was calm with her presence. Almost as if she knew she was there to help her out of her pain. She took her time giving her belly rubs, getting to know about our girl and going over each step that was going to happen. She not only sympathized with us, but opened up about losing her own dog. I can’t say enough kind words about this amazing woman-who on a Sunday, last minute almost- came to our home to do this for us. When it was time for her to leave, she brought in a very nice animal stretcher that secured our dog safely for transport to be cremated. She was wrapped in a warm soft blanket, and I felt like Dr Finks was caring for her own dog. She was compassionate & respectful, but most of all- she was human. Just like us. Our dogs ashes will be delivered about a day after she passed and will come in a nice wooden box with her name engraved. If you have to be in this unfortunate situation, I would highly recommend Dr. Finks and Lap of Love."
