With this option, your pet is cremated privately at a licensed crematory. Other arrangements are possible (please inquire) or made available directly from the crematory.
This option is for families that don't wish to have their pet's ashes returned nor wish to bury at home. Pets are respectfully cremated with other pets at a licensed crematory and ashes are scattered on private property.
There may be a fee of $50 if additional assistance to safely carry your pet out of your home is needed.
We are here to answer your questions every day, from 7am - 11pm. Appointments are scheduled throughout the week, please call for availability.
Sometimes, pets take a turn for the worse overnight, so we do our best to accommodate same day appointments with a few hours notice when possible.
If this is a medical emergency, please contact your local veterinarian or one of the emergency clinics listed in the Local Resources section.
Laura Porta, DVM
I grew up in the small Northern Michigan town of Gaylord. We had many dogs and cats when I was growing up, whom I loved from afar because I was severely allergic to them! Thankfully, I grew out of my allergies and was able to pursue a career involving my love for animals. I attended Michigan State University for my undergraduate work and veterinary school and achieved my dream in 2001. I practiced small animal medicine in the area, including clinics in Kalamazoo, the eastern Detroit area, and Howell, where I was able to help, heal and treat my furry clients.
While working in one small animal practice, we were getting several requests for in home euthanasias, and I was wiling to help. As I started to perform in home euthanasias, I found it was such an honor and privilege to help clients with their beloved pets in their home. To allow a pet to remain in the comfort of their home, surrounded by their loving family for their final moments was a feeling I can't describe.
Although I found myself drawn to helping families for end of life care, I understand the enormity of this decision as a pet parent. I had to endure the heartbreaking decision-making process as a pet parent with our dog, Quimby. Even though I'm a veterinarian, I'm also a pet parent, so I felt the anxiety and helplessness of making this difficult decision. I hope I can bring you some comfort and assurance that this decision can be your last gift to your pet. I performed Quimby's euthanasia at home with my family hugging him and loving on him as he took his final breath.
I have a wonderful husband, two beautiful children and share our loving home with a myriad of pet children including our crazy German Shorthaired Pointer, named Monty, who can't sit still. We also have two cats, named Frodo and Jess, who love to lounge in the sun on the screened-in porch as I read, which is how I love to spend my time.

"Dear Dr. Laura,
Thank you so much for your help yesterday. It was an incredibly difficult time, and I will always remember the compassion in your eyes and face, and the comfort of your reassuring words and hug... My husband and I feel you were the absolute right person to be with us, and to help with our beloved's transition.
You are doing sacred work. I/we appreciate you so much"

"Dr. Laura Porta was a blessing for Lucy. She gave Lucy an amazing final month of life (after we were told she would only make it a few weeks), easing her pain enough to let her play with friends and family at our 4th of July party. When the time came to help Lucy move on, Dr. Laura went out of her way to come to our home during her day off to make sure Lucy did not suffer. Thank you so much Dr. Laura, we are forever grateful for your help and support!"

"Laura was so compassionate and empathetic it makes a truly devastating experience just a little bit more bearable. It is truly a calling to be able to help our beloved family members over to the rainbow bridge to wait for us, in a surrounding they are comfortable in and surrounded by the people that they love and love them. Our sweet, smart, and beautiful Gabby was with us 13 years and we have so many wonderful memories of her; we are so grateful that our last memories are of her peacefully passing on at home being loved."

"I found out about Lap of Love at the HSHV Walk n' Wag n' Run a month ago. When I called them at 7:30 in the morning this week , as it was clear that our nearly 15 year old Franky needed help over the rainbow bridge, not only did I speak with a kind and compassionate real person but was able to have Dr.. Laura arrive in a matter of hours. We felt like she was an angel from heaven - so patient and understanding and professional. We lost another dog a few months ago and that was a nightmare. Our own vet kindly came out but Rudy had died a painful death before she could rearranged her appointments and come. If only we had known about Dr. Laura and Lap of Love. I highly recommend their services and am spreading the word to our own vet, our neighbors and friends and the HSHV emergency services that helped our little girl go to sleep quietly, painlessly and with dignity."
