This option is for families that don't wish to have their pet's ashes returned nor wish to bury at home. Pets are respectfully cremated with other pets at a licensed crematory and ashes are scattered on private property.
There may be a fee of $50 if additional assistance to safely carry your pet out of your home is needed.
We are here to answer your questions every day, from 7am - 11pm. Appointments are scheduled throughout the week, please call for availability.
Sometimes, pets take a turn for the worse overnight, so we do our best to accommodate same day appointments with a few hours notice when possible.
If this is a medical emergency, please contact your local veterinarian or one of the emergency clinics listed in the Local Resources section.

Laura Porta, DVM
I grew up in the small Northern Michigan town of Gaylord. We had many dogs and cats when I was growing up, whom I loved from afar because I was severely allergic to them! Thankfully, I grew out of my allergies and was able to pursue a career involving my love for animals. I attended Michigan State University for my undergraduate work and veterinary school and achieved my dream in 2001. I practiced small animal medicine in the area, including clinics in Kalamazoo, the eastern Detroit area, and Howell, where I was able to help, heal and treat my furry clients.
While working in one small animal practice, we were getting several requests for in home euthanasias, and I was wiling to help. As I started to perform in home euthanasias, I found it was such an honor and privilege to help clients with their beloved pets in their home. To allow a pet to remain in the comfort of their home, surrounded by their loving family for their final moments was a feeling I can't describe.
Although I found myself drawn to helping families for end of life care, I understand the enormity of this decision as a pet parent. I had to endure the heartbreaking decision-making process as a pet parent with our dog, Quimby. Even though I'm a veterinarian, I'm also a pet parent, so I felt the anxiety and helplessness of making this difficult decision. I hope I can bring you some comfort and assurance that this decision can be your last gift to your pet. I performed Quimby's euthanasia at home with my family hugging him and loving on him as he took his final breath.
I have a wonderful husband, two beautiful children and share our loving home with a myriad of pet children including our crazy German Shorthaired Pointer, named Monty, who can't sit still. We also have two cats, named Frodo and Jess, who love to lounge in the sun on the screened-in porch as I read, which is how I love to spend my time.

"We are so pleased we made the decision to go with Lap of Love. Dr. Laura Porta was fantastic. The experience of being able to put our precious pet down in the comfort of home was a much better option."
"When I heard the knock on the door I just started crying because I knew it was time. Dr. Laura was such a wonderful soul and when I opened the door she just looked into my eyes and I knew she understood my pain. She gave a gentle smile and came in and was greeted with kisses from Ziva and just a look from Kaeden. I could tell he was okay with her being here. She was just so patient and caring with us and so gentle and loving to Kaeden and also to Ziva as she was there at that moment. That was such a blessing to us as he had just come from hospital where he was for the last few days of his life. She emailed me the next day to say how sorry she was and offered continued support and sent me the link to set up this memorial. Thank you for being such an angel to the other angels in our lives and for the most difficult job you have and deciding that the pain is worth all the love you offer at the most difficult time. With deep gratitude I send you blessings. Deb"

"Dr. Laura was amazing, she was there to assist our family during this unexpected difficult time . She did a great job explaining every step of the process, and gave our Cat Pooh the angel wings he deserved. He passed away peacefully at home, in his own bed, surrounded by his family. We can’t thank Laura enough for her support during this difficult time.
We definitely would recommend lap of love to anyone who is faced with the similar challenges of caring for a suffering animal.
Thank you again, The DeLozier Family."

"Dr. Laura was amazing. I first made the call in July and to ask some questions about Lap of Love. She checked in with us from time to time via email. When she came to the door on December 8, she was so kind and caring. She talked to Chewy and the whole family. She petted him and told him what a handsome boy he was. She was gentle and didn't rush us and really listened to us talk about our gentle soul. If someone has to make the decision to let their pet go, I could not recommend more highly Lap of Love. Having our precious dog not be stressed by going to the vet office and having him here in our home, with his favorite blanket and toys made the awful ordeal better. It was so peaceful and dignified. Dr. Laura is wonderful and we were blessed to have her help Chewy cross to the rainbow bridge.Thank you for providing this service to us pet parents and thank you to Dr. Laura!"
