Dr. Laura

Laura Porta, DVM

I grew up in the small Northern Michigan town of Gaylord.  We had many dogs and cats when I was growing up, whom I loved from afar because I was severely allergic to them!  Thankfully, I grew out of my allergies and was able to pursue a career involving my love for animals.  I attended Michigan State University for my undergraduate work and veterinary school and achieved my dream in 2001.  I practiced small animal medicine in the area, including clinics in Kalamazoo, the eastern Detroit area, and Howell, where I was able to help, heal and treat my furry clients.

While working in one small animal practice, we were getting several requests for in home euthanasias, and I was wiling to help.  As I started to perform in home euthanasias, I found it was such an honor and privilege to help clients with their beloved pets in their home.  To allow a pet to remain in the comfort of their home, surrounded by their loving family for their final moments was a feeling I can't describe.

Although I found myself drawn to helping families for end of life care, I understand the enormity of this decision as a pet parent. I had to endure the heartbreaking decision-making process as a pet parent with our dog, Quimby. Even though I'm a veterinarian, I'm also a pet parent, so I felt the anxiety and helplessness of making this difficult decision. I hope I can bring you some comfort and assurance that this decision can be your last gift to your pet. I performed Quimby's euthanasia at home with my family hugging him and loving on him as he took his final breath.

I have a wonderful husband, two beautiful children and share our loving home with a myriad of pet children including our crazy German Shorthaired Pointer, named Monty, who can't sit still. We also have two cats, named Frodo and Jess, who love to lounge in the sun on the screened-in porch as I read, which is how I love to spend my time.

"Yesterday, August 6, 2018 was Beethoven's last day on Earth. He is my beloved St. Bernard and had lost the use of his hind legs due to spinal cord cancer. I called in the morning and Dr. Laura came out that afternoon. It was important to me because it hurt me to look at my puppy (he was almost 8, but still my baby) and know the end was near.

She was very nice to me and my family but the most important part is how caring and loving she was to Beethoven. She calmed him and didn't hurt him and was respectful of Beethoven. I will never forget her for helping with the hardest decision I had to make so far in my life. I will miss Beethoven but know that he left in the best way possible.

I thank you and Beethoven does too."

"David and I want to extend our warmest gratitude for the kindness that Dr. Laura showed us and our dear Dixie through a truly difficult time. Dixie was with us for over 17 years and was loved like a child. She brought us great joy and affection. She will be forever missed.

Dixie took a quick turn toward the end and Dr. Laura was here to ease our concerns about letting her go. She gently explained what would occur and allowed us to spend the time we needed with her. It was a great comfort being able to hold Dixie as her pain eased and she drifted off. The care Dr. Laura showed Dixie after she was gone showed her gentle spirit and kindness towards animals and the humans that love them.

It may seem silly to some, but we've also appreciated the small token of her paw print to keep with us through the years."

"My sweet Figaro declined in health quickly and he was never a good traveler. When he was no longer responding to treatment, I knew that I wanted to have his last moments be stress free and in the comfort of our home. Lap of Love was so caring on the phone when I scheduled the appointment. Dr. Porta could not have been more wonderful. She listened to our stories about our dear, sweet boy and was very comforting in our time of grief. I am so appreciative of Lap or Love and Dr. Porta for providing such a wonderful and caring service."

"Dr. Laura was Max's angel on the day he passed. She was so caring and sympathetic to Max's condition and he loved her enough right away to roll on his back to get a belly rub and he remained that way during the entire procedure until he peacefully passed away. I am forever grateful to Dr. Laura for making such a hard situation a great experience for Max. He died with a smile and I am so happy with the decision to have Dr. Laura come to my house, I would not ever do it any differently. Dr. Laura, you are truly an angel for our furry companions, Max thanks you for helping him to peacefully cross over. :)"

"Dr. Laura and the staff were so wonderful. She treated Rosie and her sisters with such respect and kindness. She gave us the time we needed and explained everything that she was doing. I appreciate her patience with us and allowing us to tell some stories about Rosie. She truly is a gift to be able to do what she does."

“Figaro was an unbelievable kitty. Everyone who met him immediately fell in love with how sweet he was. In his younger years, he would play catch and loved a rabbits foot toy that to this day I have no idea where it came from. As he got older, his snuggles at night were constant, he was always by my side and had the best purr. Figaro would ...

“It’s been so difficult saying good bye to my sweet little boy Max. From the moment of his birth, I loved him and spoiled him. He was the runt of the litter, and filled my heart with joy. He followed me everywhere. Would be at my feet in the kitchen, would lay between me and my keyboard when I worked, and in my lap every night. I thought at times ...

“To my little Maxy Angel baby: You gave such love and joy to me and everyone who knew you in your short life here and you were such a good boy. You spent many days right next to me and followed me endlessly anywhere I went and you laid right underfoot whenever I was cooking or doing anything, just to be close to me, my constant companion and ...

“Rosie - our big girl. We miss your goofy smile and tilted face when you were talking to us. Despite your size your personality was even bigger. The house is not the same without you. Your sister looks for you every morning. We know you have lots of friend up in heaven but we sure wish you were still with us. Believe it or not slingers and extra ...
