With this option, your pet is cremated privately at a licensed crematory. Other arrangements are possible (please inquire) or made available directly from the crematory.
This option is for families that don't wish to have their pet's ashes returned nor wish to bury at home. Pets are respectfully cremated with other pets at a licensed crematory and ashes are scattered on private property.
There may be a fee of $50 if additional assistance to safely carry your pet out of your home is needed.
Dr. Laura will be unavailable from June 22nd to July 3rd. Our Support Team is available everyday via phone or email to answer your questions and to schedule an appointment upon her return.
We are here to answer your questions every day, from 7am - 11pm. Appointments are scheduled throughout the week, please call for availability.
Sometimes, pets take a turn for the worse overnight, so we do our best to accommodate same day appointments with a few hours notice when possible.
If this is a medical emergency, please contact your local veterinarian or one of the emergency clinics listed in the Local Resources section.
Laura Porta, DVM
I grew up in the small Northern Michigan town of Gaylord. We had many dogs and cats when I was growing up, whom I loved from afar because I was severely allergic to them! Thankfully, I grew out of my allergies and was able to pursue a career involving my love for animals. I attended Michigan State University for my undergraduate work and veterinary school and achieved my dream in 2001. I practiced small animal medicine in the area, including clinics in Kalamazoo, the eastern Detroit area, and Howell, where I was able to help, heal and treat my furry clients.
While working in one small animal practice, we were getting several requests for in home euthanasias, and I was wiling to help. As I started to perform in home euthanasias, I found it was such an honor and privilege to help clients with their beloved pets in their home. To allow a pet to remain in the comfort of their home, surrounded by their loving family for their final moments was a feeling I can't describe.
Although I found myself drawn to helping families for end of life care, I understand the enormity of this decision as a pet parent. I had to endure the heartbreaking decision-making process as a pet parent with our dog, Quimby. Even though I'm a veterinarian, I'm also a pet parent, so I felt the anxiety and helplessness of making this difficult decision. I hope I can bring you some comfort and assurance that this decision can be your last gift to your pet. I performed Quimby's euthanasia at home with my family hugging him and loving on him as he took his final breath.
I have a wonderful husband, two beautiful children and share our loving home with a myriad of pet children including our crazy German Shorthaired Pointer, named Monty, who can't sit still. We also have two cats, named Frodo and Jess, who love to lounge in the sun on the screened-in porch as I read, which is how I love to spend my time.
"I found out about Lap of Love at the HSHV Walk n' Wag n' Run a month ago. When I called them at 7:30 in the morning this week , as it was clear that our nearly 15 year old Franky needed help over the rainbow bridge, not only did I speak with a kind and compassionate real person but was able to have Dr.. Laura arrive in a matter of hours. We felt like she was an angel from heaven - so patient and understanding and professional. We lost another dog a few months ago and that was a nightmare. Our own vet kindly came out but Rudy had died a painful death before she could rearranged her appointments and come. If only we had known about Dr. Laura and Lap of Love. I highly recommend their services and am spreading the word to our own vet, our neighbors and friends and the HSHV emergency services that helped our little girl go to sleep quietly, painlessly and with dignity."

"Dr. Laura was amazing and I was so impressed with her compassion. It was like she was a member of the family and had known Ginger her whole life. I was impressed with all the small details like wrapping Ginger in a blanket and contact afterwards. Those things really made the difference. Everyone I have encountered/spoken with was great and really made a difficult experience as good as it could possibly be. I highly recommend Dr. Laura and Lap of Love to anyone and am thankful that there are still people like them in the world today."

"Today Dr. Laura came to help us say goodbye to our two huskies. My husband and I would like to say thank you to Dr. Laura. She was so kind and gentle and let us take our time saying goodbye. She explained everything to us and helped us through the process. We received a clay paw print of both of our babies along with a swatch of fur and some wildflower seeds to plant in their memory. Thank you Dr Laura, you were very kind and gentle and understanding for both our babies and us."

"Dr Laura was not the initial contact with Lap of Love. Dr Courtney Graham originally assessed Bella and kept in constant touch with me concerning her condition. It was Memorial Day when Bella let me know it was time and I contacted Dr Courtney. We made arrangements for her to come on Wednesday morning as she was booked on Tuesday. On Tuesday, however, it was apparent that Bella should not wait any longer and Dr Courtney referred us to Dr Laura. She arrived exactly on time, showed great compassion, and made Bella's passing a beautiful experience. I will forever be grateful to all at Lap of Love for offering this great service."

"Dr. Porta was great, she was able to do her job all the while our two young girls, ages 2 and 4 climbed all over her. Thank you for everything that evening. Honestly was so appreciated!!"

"Dear Dr. Porta (Laura):
I am immeasurably grateful to you and to Lap of Love services. Letting go of Bobo was incredibly painful but the experience of saying good bye was really the very best I could imagine. For years (and of course, more recently), I have imagined how I would like the end for him to be; yesterday surpassed my expectations. You are a true angel and you have really touched us with your compassion, patience, clear love for animals, and sensibility for this work. THANK YOU so very much for everything. We are moving out today and tears have passed a bit, but I'm also really happy knowing the worst is over for Mr. Wilson. I can move forward knowing that yesterday was as beautiful an experience as it was. We will send prayers to you and all the other families you help.
Again, thank you, thank you, thank you!"
