With this option, your pet is cremated privately at a licensed crematory. Other arrangements are possible (please inquire) or made available directly from the crematory.
This option is for families that don't wish to have their pet's ashes returned nor wish to bury at home. Pets are respectfully cremated with other pets at a licensed crematory and ashes are scattered on private property.
There may be a fee of $50 if additional assistance to safely carry your pet out of your home is needed.
We are here to answer your questions every day, from 7am - 11pm. Appointments are scheduled throughout the week, please call for availability.
Sometimes, pets take a turn for the worse overnight, so we do our best to accommodate same day appointments with a few hours notice when possible.
If this is a medical emergency, please contact your local veterinarian or one of the emergency clinics listed in the Local Resources section.
Laura Porta, DVM
I grew up in the small Northern Michigan town of Gaylord. We had many dogs and cats when I was growing up, whom I loved from afar because I was severely allergic to them! Thankfully, I grew out of my allergies and was able to pursue a career involving my love for animals. I attended Michigan State University for my undergraduate work and veterinary school and achieved my dream in 2001. I practiced small animal medicine in the area, including clinics in Kalamazoo, the eastern Detroit area, and Howell, where I was able to help, heal and treat my furry clients.
While working in one small animal practice, we were getting several requests for in home euthanasias, and I was wiling to help. As I started to perform in home euthanasias, I found it was such an honor and privilege to help clients with their beloved pets in their home. To allow a pet to remain in the comfort of their home, surrounded by their loving family for their final moments was a feeling I can't describe.
Although I found myself drawn to helping families for end of life care, I understand the enormity of this decision as a pet parent. I had to endure the heartbreaking decision-making process as a pet parent with our dog, Quimby. Even though I'm a veterinarian, I'm also a pet parent, so I felt the anxiety and helplessness of making this difficult decision. I hope I can bring you some comfort and assurance that this decision can be your last gift to your pet. I performed Quimby's euthanasia at home with my family hugging him and loving on him as he took his final breath.
I have a wonderful husband, two beautiful children and share our loving home with a myriad of pet children including our crazy German Shorthaired Pointer, named Monty, who can't sit still. We also have two cats, named Frodo and Jess, who love to lounge in the sun on the screened-in porch as I read, which is how I love to spend my time.
"Dear Dr. Porta (Laura):
I am immeasurably grateful to you and to Lap of Love services. Letting go of Bobo was incredibly painful but the experience of saying good bye was really the very best I could imagine. For years (and of course, more recently), I have imagined how I would like the end for him to be; yesterday surpassed my expectations. You are a true angel and you have really touched us with your compassion, patience, clear love for animals, and sensibility for this work. THANK YOU so very much for everything. We are moving out today and tears have passed a bit, but I'm also really happy knowing the worst is over for Mr. Wilson. I can move forward knowing that yesterday was as beautiful an experience as it was. We will send prayers to you and all the other families you help.
Again, thank you, thank you, thank you!"

"Today was the day we let our fur kid go. It was not an easy decision to make, but in the end we realized he had been letting us know it was time. For 10 1/2 years, Rocky brought us joy, laughter, happiness and loyalty. He earned every one of the tears we've shed and no doubt will continue to shed for some time. From the moment I made the call, I was treated with compassion and caring even though I was crying throughout the phone call. I received an email right after my call, explaining what would happen. Dr. Porta called when she was about a half hour out, and from the moment she came into the house to meet Rocky, she made him comfortable and passed the Rocky Test. Our furry paperweight got to be in his own home, surrounded by his family, comfortable and secure. He got to lay in his favorite place looking out the door hearing our voices to the end. We weren't hurried or rushed and she let us make the call for the final shot, giving us the time we needed. She brought the stretcher in for him and we placed him on in it and tucked him in with his blanket and we carried him out. As painful as the decision was to make, using Lap of Love allowed us to give Rocky the gentle and painless death he earned and deserved. I am so glad that Lap of Love was there for us and would unreservedly recommend them to anyone else faced with making this decision. Dr. Laura was kind an compassionate and I'm so glad she was there for us. Thank you...."

Thank you so much for your support, kindness, and gentleness! Lindsay and I appreciate it more than you will ever know. You provided us the perfect atmosphere to say goodbye to our beloved Spartygirl. The special touches you provided were so thoughtful and went above and beyond anything we expected. Thank you so much for the lifelong memory you created for our family!!"

Thank you, and your staff. I have no words for how wonderful you made this difficult decision. From the moment my phone call was answered, to the time you showed up and had to listen to my father's bad jokes. I made this decision before....but never, NEVER, have I felt so much empathy and sincere care. YOU, Dr. Laura, have already gained YOUR angel wings.....Thank you."

"I just wanted to say THANK YOU to Dr. Laura for all that she did for Kota and to help him in his final moments, and to help me not be a basket case thru all of this. She was so caring and she explained everything to me and when she came for her Initial Consultation, just sat next to him and petted him the whole time. Well not like she had a choice. If she stopped, she got "THE LOOK", lol Thank you once again Dr. Laura and I will forever be grateful to you and Laps of Love."
