Meet the Doctor

Let us introduce you to the amazing hospice veterinarians in your area.

Laura Porta, DVM

I grew up in the small Northern Michigan town of Gaylord.  We had many dogs and cats when I was growing up, whom I loved from afar because I was severely allergic to them!  Thankfully, I grew out of my allergies and was able to pursue a career involving my love for animals.  I attended Michigan State University for my undergraduate work and veterinary school and achieved my dream in 2001.  I practiced small animal medicine in the area, including clinics in Kalamazoo, the eastern Detroit area, and Howell, where I was able to help, heal and treat my furry clients.

While working in one small animal practice, we were getting several requests for in home euthanasias, and I was wiling to help.  As I started to perform in home euthanasias, I found it was such an honor and privilege to help clients with their beloved pets in their home.  To allow a pet to remain in the comfort of their home, surrounded by their loving family for their final moments was a feeling I can't describe.

Although I found myself drawn to helping families for end of life care, I understand the enormity of this decision as a pet parent. I had to endure the heartbreaking decision-making process as a pet parent with our dog, Quimby. Even though I'm a veterinarian, I'm also a pet parent, so I felt the anxiety and helplessness of making this difficult decision. I hope I can bring you some comfort and assurance that this decision can be your last gift to your pet. I performed Quimby's euthanasia at home with my family hugging him and loving on him as he took his final breath.

I have a wonderful husband, two beautiful children and share our loving home with a myriad of pet children including our crazy German Shorthaired Pointer, named Monty, who can't sit still. We also have two cats, named Frodo and Jess, who love to lounge in the sun on the screened-in porch as I read, which is how I love to spend my time.

"Dr. Laura Porta was wonderful"

"Thank you Dr Laura. You helped our babies pass with dignity and love. I am grateful for your kindness."

"Dr. Laura was amazing, she was there to assist our family during this unexpected difficult time . She did a great job explaining every step of the process, and gave our Cat Pooh the angel wings he deserved. He passed away peacefully at home, in his own bed, surrounded by his family. We can’t thank Laura enough for her support during this difficult time.

We definitely would recommend lap of love to anyone who is faced with the similar challenges of caring for a suffering animal.

Thank you again, The DeLozier Family."

Danielle Delozier
brownstown, Michigan

"Dr. Laura was amazing. I first made the call in July and to ask some questions about Lap of Love. She checked in with us from time to time via email. When she came to the door on December 8, she was so kind and caring. She talked to Chewy and the whole family. She petted him and told him what a handsome boy he was. She was gentle and didn't rush us and really listened to us talk about our gentle soul. If someone has to make the decision to let their pet go, I could not recommend more highly Lap of Love. Having our precious dog not be stressed by going to the vet office and having him here in our home, with his favorite blanket and toys made the awful ordeal better. It was so peaceful and dignified. Dr. Laura is wonderful and we were blessed to have her help Chewy cross to the rainbow bridge.Thank you for providing this service to us pet parents and thank you to Dr. Laura!"

"I’d like to thank Dr. Laura and Lap of Love for responding to my last minute request of changing appointment. Dr. Laura was very professional yet wam and compassionate, and treated my dog with dignity and kindness. I asked her if I’m doing the right thing, and she explained his condition and this is the best I can do."

Northville, Michigan

"I simply cannot say enough good things about Dr. Laura.

She was so empathetic to our feelings .

She actually made our dog's passing a beautiful experience.

You could tell she loved her job and animals the minute

she entered our home. My dog immediately liked her even

though she was entering his favorite spot and a spot he

would be the most territorial about. I fell in love with Dr Laura

when she told me how handsome our little Ricky was,

and I knew she meant it. She was so calm and loving and

explained things to us every step of the way. She allowed us

enough time to pet and love our dog before his passing. It was

important to her that both Ricky and his owners alike have a

good experience. Thank you Dr. Laura!!!!!!!"

“Holly was such a sweetheart who loved to be petted on her terms. A little "aloof." She gave us unconditional love all the time. We had her for 14 wonderful years but that is still not enough. We miss her so much. Kind of feels like our hearts were ripped out. We are trying to take comfort in knowing she no longer has any pain or anxiety, is ...

“Chewy was such a good and handsome boy. Everyone said so. He loved his family and especially, Andrew. He was very wary of tall men with glasses, but even as Andrew grew tall, he was never scared of him. He enjoyed walking with his mom for an hour almost everyday. He loved the sunshine, warm towels from the dryer that he snuggled up in, chicken and ...

“More than sadness, I have a lot of regret in my mind. He must have been wanted to play with me a lot more. He must have been wanted to eat more human food. Now he’s although cremated and became a tiny box and a lock of fur, we spend more time together. He was so close to me and always there, so sometimes I forgot about him. Now I’m always ...
