Meet the Doctor

Let us introduce you to the amazing hospice veterinarians in your area.

Sarah Clarke, DVM

I’ve known I wanted to be a veterinarian since I was about 8 years old- and still have a 3rd grade school paper to prove it!  I grew up in Albany, NY, Baltimore, MD and Jacksonville, FL before attending the College of William and Mary in Viriginia for my undergraduate degree in Biology and then returning to Florida to obtain my veterinary degree at the University of Florida.

I grew up always having a mix of animals in the house- cats, dogs, fish, pet mice, and even an occasional rescued baby bird.  I loved learning about all these pets almost as much as caring for them, so veterinary school was a perfect fit.  After 1 year in small animal general practice in New Jersey after graduating, I took a position at a feline only clinic in Jacksonville, Florida.  I remained there for nearly 11 years and formed close bonds with many clients through those years- seeing numerous cats from early in their lives until it was time to guide their owners through the tough decisions at the end.  While at that practice I occasionally had the opportunity to make home visits for euthanasia and was always struck by what a different, calmer, and more personal experience it was.  It really made a difference to the owners to have their pets in their favorite spot, surrounded by the people and things they love.

I’m very happy to have recently settled in Richmond with my family - my husband Jeff (a veterinary neurologist and fellow UF graduate) our son Andrew, daughter Katie, and our beloved shelter dog Hammie.  I hope to be able to help families in this area by making one of the most difficult times they’ll face as pet owners a bit easier and more peaceful.

"Dr. Sarah helped my baby pass peacefully into the Rainbow Bridge. I was having a very difficult time and Dr. Sarah was so compassionate and loving. She listened to everything we had to say. I felt like she understood what I was going through and was very comforting throughout the whole process."

Kristin Lakey
Chesterfield, Virginia

"First off, thank you to Lap of Love for providing this service. Nothing is more gut-wrenching than taking your beloved pet to a place where they typically don't like to go, to die on a cold, metal table and then having to carry them back home (we have a nice place on our farm to keep them with us forever). Having a special person like Dr. Sarah Clarke come to our home (at night and out in the boondocks where she did not know the area) and help our beloved Annie cross over the Rainbow Bridge while laying on our living room floor in front of a nice fire made a difficult event so much easier. Dr. Clarke is an amazing human being, as well as a good vet. She was kind, warm, caring and sympathetic. If she is typical of the vets that you employ, you truly have an amazing organization. Even Lisa, who first took my phone call, came across the phone line as a deeply caring and sympathetic person. Again, thank you for being there for us. We will be eternally grateful for what you do for us."

Ed & Lisa Gooding
Montpelier, Virginia

"So grateful I received your information through a friend of mine at the gym. She highly recommended you and she was ever so right. From the moment of my first call I felt the compassion and care. I was not sure if I could handle it all but wanted "my baby" to pass calmly in her own loving home. Dr. Sarah was so professional and loving and I am truly amazed by the extreme level of care. The clay imprint of her paw as well as the fur clipping are such a comfort to have . I really appreciate all she has done and please use her service if that heartbreaking moment arrives."

Sonja van der Drift
Midlothian, Virginia

"Dr. Sarah made me feel at ease making the most difficult decision of my life. Her compassion is amazing!"

Lisa Petersen
Richmond, Virginia

"Dr. Sarah was amazing and it is easy to tell how much she cares about her clients and their furry friends. Wouldn't have done it any other way."

Tom Hinkes

"Thank you, Dr Sarah, for answering all my questions and for helping Harry pass peacefully, at home in his favorite spot on the deck, surrounded by loved ones."

“Dayze Mae was my best friend. We did everything together. She was with me through college, meeting my husband, death of family members, and having two kids. She was with me all the way, making me smile when I was sad, licking my tears away when I cried, and being overly excited when I was happy. She could read me like no one else even my ...

“On November 14, 2017 I had to make the heartbreaking decision to let my "baby" Sandy go over the rainbow bridge. When I adopted her from the animal shelter on the island of St Maarten in May 2003 I promised her that I always would take good care of her. She was such a sweet and gentle "coconut retriever" (my Vet on St Maarten came up with this ...

“I have searched the past year to find the words to memorialize you. I am still speechless. There are no words that can properly pay tribute to you.
You were my everything. My constant companion. My love. My friend.
This past year has been the hardest year of my life. There is not a day that I don't think of you and miss you. You were my ...
