Summer's here, and it's the perfect time for worry-free outdoor fun with your four-legged friends! Pets experiencing Geriatric Onset Laryngeal Paralysis and Polyneuropathy (GOLPP) are at a higher risk for overheating and breathing issues during the hotter months, so it’s crucial to watch for the following symptoms and speak to your veterinarian if any concerns arise.
GOLPP is the progressive degeneration of the nerves supplying the major organs of the throat, such as the voice box and esophagus, as well as the legs - with the hind legs most commonly affected. It tends to present in medium to large dog breeds like Labradors, Greyhounds, Borzois, Newfoundlands, Dobermans, German Shepherds, Australian Shepherds, and Brittany Spaniels. These dogs can show symptoms as young as eight years of age. While less common, this condition can also occur in cats.
Symptoms can include:
* Noisy breathing
* Difficulty breathing in hotter temperatures
* Changes in the bark
* Throat clearing, hacking, or coughing
* Hind-end weakness with an unsteady gait
* Muscle loss
Unfortunately, there is currently no cure for GOLPP. However, there are ways to help manage this condition and help you maintain your pet’s quality of life. Speaking with your veterinarian is an essential step for understanding what to look out for and establishing an appropriate management plan.
Treatment options include:
* Surgical intervention (Laryngeal Tie-back or Ventral laryngotomy)
* Hydrotherapy, acupuncture, or mobility assistance like the Help ‘Em Up Harness
* Anti-anxiety or pain management strategies
* Eating/drinking plans
* Gastrointestinal protective agents
We highly recommend keeping a close eye on your pets when they're outside and limiting their heat exposure since they may have difficulty cooling down if they are experiencing GOLPP. Providing your pet access to a cool, non-drafty area within your home can provide them with much-needed comfort.
