vetDr. May

Thank you Dr. May. Charlie was a very special boy, and our home doesn’t feel the same without him. I really appreciate how quickly you were able to come over, and how easy you made the whole process. I’m so glad that Charlie made it very clear that it was his time to go, and that he was able to pass peacefully in his favorite chair in the sunshine.

Euthanasia is an impossible decision and an excruciating experience. The death of a pet, a furry family member, is inevitable. As much as we want them to live forever, they don’t. Giving them a peaceful, soft goodbye to the other side is the last kindness. This needs to be administered by someone who is professional, communicative, loving, caring, compassionate, patient, and kind. All these traits are inherent in Dr. Weis. Because of who Dr. Weis is, there was a peaceful calm that fell over our home the moment she entered. Her presence was tranquil and her voice soft. She listened to our story with patience and interest. There was no doubt that she cared about our emotional well-being. Every minute she was with Cosmo, before his death, and when she removed his body, it was clear she cared for him. She deferred to our needs every moment she was in our home. She effectively “held our hands” through this process. After the stories had been told, Dr. Weis explained the process, answered any questions, and had a sure way of administering the sedative painlessly. Everything we were promised by Lap of Love, Dr. Weis fulfilled. However, she offered us so much more than a checklist of services. During our visit with Dr. Weis about Cosmo, he reached out to her then retracted his paw. She was always respectful of Cosmo and his space, so she had reached out to him in reaction, but when he retracted his paw, so did she retract her hand. We believe, seeing this, Cosmo shakily walked down his ramp and went directly to her. He sniffed her shoes and rubbed them, as if saying “Thank you for being here and helping us in this process.” She reached and rubbed his cheek. That moment was the sweetest moment between the two of them and a moment that told us he knew what was happening and he was grateful to her. As he descended and ascended the ramp to his couch pillow, Dr. Weis protected him as one would protect a wobbly toddler. Her compassion brought us peace. We were impressed by her in every aspect. Dr. Weis brought a churro treat to give to Cosmo while she administered the sedative. We didn’t have anything to distract him. We hadn’t thought of it. So, we were and still are grateful for that small act because Cosmo got something new as his last treat and he was unaware of the administration of the sedative. This was a wonderful gift. Dr. Weis gave us as much time as we needed before the sedation, after the sedation, and after he had passed. This was a blessing to us. While it was so hard to let go of Cosmo that day, we feel that we had the time we needed to honor him, to soothe him, love him, and to give him this soft goodbye. This was an impossible decision and not one that anyone wants to make. Dr. Weis made that impossible decision as peaceful and beautiful an act of love as it could be. We have in our memory just how gentle and serene the whole process was and it eases our pain and any guilt that may creep in at times. We know, because of Dr. Weis, that his passing was comfortable, loving, painless, and tranquil. We owe her a grand thank you for giving Cosmo dignity at the end of his life and giving us peace.
