Meet the veterinarians
About Dr. Nancy Goyert
I grew up in a suburb of Detroit, Michigan. I had four older brothers but, alas, no pets. That changed when I was 12 years old and we adopted an adorable miniature schnauzer named Fritz. That was probably the happiest day of my childhood and the beginning of my lifelong love for animals.
I also loved horses, but the suburbs offered little opportunity to spend time with them, except for the occasional visit to my grandparent’s farm in Indiana, when I would play with their ornery ponies. Shortly after graduating high school, and due to some extraordinary circumstances, I was able to acquire my first horse, a palomino mare named Chelsa. The many happy hours I spent with her inspired me to obtain a degree in equestrian studies from Salem College in West Virginia.
While working at various equine facilities after graduation, I discovered that my favorite aspect of the job was assisting the veterinarians who treated the horses. These interactions led me to pursue a degree in veterinary medicine. I graduated from Michigan State University in 1988 and immediately moved to Tallahassee, Florida to join Cumberland Animal Clinic, which was a mixed animal practice. I did mostly mobile equine work. Eventually, the business split into two individual practices—one small animal and one large animal—and I became the sole proprietor of Cumberland Equine Services.
As an ambulatory veterinarian for more than 35 years, I was frequently asked by my horse clients and members of my dog obedience club to euthanize beloved pets in their homes. I soon realized what a precious gift this was to the families, so in 2016 I added Creature Comforts In-Home Pet Euthanasia to the veterinary services I offered. I will always cherish my years as an equine veterinarian, but I am looking forward to pursuing my developing passion for end-of-life care with Lap of Love.
When I am not working, I enjoy riding my quarter horse, raising and training dogs, volunteering at an elephant sanctuary, managing my herd of Belted Galloway cattle, bike riding, and swimming.
