Meet the veterinarians
About Dr. Dana Powers
I grew up in Columbus, Ohio, but for the past 20 years, I’ve been fortunate to call New Mexico my home. Though I’ve lived in various places, New Mexico has always held a special place in my heart.
From a young age, I’ve had a deep love for animals and dreamed of becoming a veterinarian. Growing up in the city didn’t stop me from enjoying the companionship of many different species, including cats, dogs, rabbits, birds, hamsters, and fish.
I pursued my passion for science and animals by studying biology and minoring in psychology at the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology. After working as a veterinary assistant, I earned my veterinary degree from Colorado State University. With my clinical experience based in general practice and some emergency care, I’ve found joy in discussing with clients topics like puppy and kitten care (fun fact: this is how I met my husband!), weight management, and pain management. One area particularly close to my heart is end-of-life care.
After losing both of my parents in a short period, I experienced firsthand the invaluable support provided by a compassionate hospice team. This inspired me to offer the same empathy and care to my patients and their families, ensuring they never feel alone during difficult moments.
While I’ve experienced the joy of sharing life with pets, I’ve also endured the heartbreak of saying goodbye. These experiences fuel my commitment to making every stage of a pet’s life as comfortable and meaningful as possible, especially those final moments. While parting with a beloved companion is never easy, I strive to provide comfort and dignity during those times.
In my free time, I enjoy reading and have been learning to knit and crochet. Cooking with my husband and spending quality time with my family are some of my favorite ways to unwind and recharge.
