Our sweet boy. Thank you for always being fully who you were and for all you taught us throughout your life. You taught us to drink in the joy of every moment, how to be an exceptional companion, and the importance of doing what you love. You explored new adventures throughout your life, and you always seemed to know when to lead, when to follow, and when to walk alongside. We love you Super Duper Cooper Man, and we will miss you forever.

Rhiley passed away yesterday, and our home feels a little quieter. There are dogs, and then there are those once-in-a-lifetime companions who leave paw prints not only on our floors, but on our hearts. Rhiley was one of those special gifts. Her story began with a second chance. Her original owner brought her back to the pet store because of her skin issues. But a week later, my son Jonathan walked into that same store—and it was love at first sight. No hesitation… she had already found where she belonged. Bringing her home came with a surprise—I was allergic to dog hair. But that didn’t matter. I went for weekly allergy shots because, from the very beginning, Rhiley wasn’t going anywhere. She was here to stay. She loved the simple things most—sitting in front of the door, sunning herself like she was letting the whole neighborhood know it was going to be a good day. Watching her friends… the birds and squirrels out on the deck… completely content just being part of their world. Rhiley never caught up to the deer in the neighborhood, but from her perspective, it was all about the chase. She loved the Jersey Shore, running along the beach as if she owned it—though she could never quite understand why those seagulls didn’t want to play with her. She was a good girl—cooperating with the vet like a champ, even when it wasn’t easy, and doing her best to manage her weight… despite what can only be described as a lifetime of treat overload. She knew she was spoiled. She was the princess, and she owned it. And mornings… those belonged to Rhiley. 5:00 AM meant it was time to start the day. No snooze button. No negotiation. Just her joy for life. She wasn’t perfect. She shed all over the house. She only walked when she wanted to walk. She got anxious every time we left. And still… why is it so hard to say goodbye? Because those weren’t flaws. They were her. The fur meant she was always close. The stubborn walks meant she lived life on her terms. The anxious goodbyes meant we mattered that much to her. And maybe the hardest part of all… is the responsibility we carry at the end. The moment when love asks something from us instead of just giving. The moment we must choose to say goodbye. It’s a weight no one ever feels ready for. Because how do you let go of something that trusted you completely? Something that depended on you for everything… especially at the end? But that’s also where the depth of love shows. Because saying goodbye isn’t giving up on them. It’s the final act of caring for them. Of protecting them. Of choosing peace for them, even when it breaks your own heart. That kind of decision… It’s not weakness. It’s love in its most selfless form. And that’s why it’s so hard. Because she gave us her whole life… And in the end, we were called to give her that one last gift in return. Rhiley wasn’t just a dog. She was chosen… and she chose us right back. Today, we grieve because Rhiley was deeply loved. We will miss her gentle presence, her loving eyes, her familiar routines, and even those early-morning wake-up calls. The house feels smaller without her, and an emptiness cannot be filled. But amid the sadness, we are grateful. Grateful for every lesson she taught us about loyalty, joy, forgiveness, and unconditional love. And most of all, grateful that Jonathan saw something special in a little dog who needed a home and brought her into our lives. And now, I can only imagine that moment in heaven… when Rhiley saw Jonathan again, running to him, whole and happy, tail wagging like it never stopped. A reunion filled with pure joy; the kind only love like hers can bring.
In four short years Hilda left a permanent and beautiful mark on our lives. We will love her forever.
